Race to be the first crisis

President-Elect Obama already had to deal with his first mini-crisis: A pretty lame joke about Nancy Reagan that led him to have to say sorry to the Gipper-ess.. But the real crises are yet to begin.. January 20, 2009, he will face numerous tests, namely the most current economic crisis that America and the world are embroiled in.. Not to mention the the billions of dollars that the American auto industry is most likely going to need.. But there's more to face President Obama: Russia is going berserk the with European Union worries about Russian missiles Plus Obama bin Laden may release a videotape just in time for the Obama Administration's first days in charge. . .

ABC NEWS: NSA Eavesdropping on Americans--even during phone sex

ABC news reported exclusively this week that the NSA eavesdropped on hundreds of American citizens as they called home.. Sometimes, they even listened in during phone sex, according to one:
"Faulk says he and others in his section of the NSA facility at Fort Gordon routinely shared salacious or tantalizing phone calls that had been intercepted, alerting office mates to certain time codes of "cuts" that were available on each operator's computer. "Hey, check this out," Faulk says he would be told, "there's good phone sex or there's some pillow talk, pull up this call, it's really funny, go check it out. It would be some colonel making pillow talk and we would say, 'Wow, this was crazy'," Faulk told ABC News. Faulk said he joined in to listen, and talk about it during breaks in Back Hall's "smoke pit," but ended up feeling badly about his actions. "I feel that it was something that the people should not have done. Including me," he said. "
President Bush said that this was not happening nor would it. If the ABC report is to believed, it did.

Code red! Homeland Security can read minds!? The best intentions.. often go awry

Science fiction got boring. Reality is scary. According to FOX NEWS there is a new federal computer program called MALINTENT. It's the 'brain child' (not pun intended?) of the Human Factors Division of Homeland Security .. and according to the designers and reporters that are quietly spreading the story, the program searches a human body for clues that could predict a terror attack. The miracle of technology:
But this is no polygraph test. Subjects do not get hooked up or strapped down for a careful reading; those sensors do all the work without any actual physical contact. It's like an X-ray for bad intentions
The best intentions of men often go awry. Perhaps the best intentions look bad. Would the Human Factors Division be able to tell the difference? The story goes on:
This whole security array — the scanners and screeners who make up the mobile lab — is called "Future Attribute Screening Technology" — or FAST — because it is designed to get passengers through security in two to four minutes, and often faster. If you're rushed or stressed, you may send out signals of anxiety, but FAST isn't fooled. It's already good enough to tell the difference between a harried traveler and a terrorist. Even if you sweat heavily by nature, FAST won't mistake you for a baddie.
Feeling uneasy yet? Anyone else worried? Worried.. for me is Newspeak for damn creeped out.

Biden Flashback: September 10, 2001

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren
As Barack Obama gets ready to speak to the nation, and world, a quote is making its way across the net, Digg, and Stumble.. Joe Biden from 2001, one day before 9/11:
"We will have diverted all that money to address the least likely threat while the real threats come into this country in the hold of a ship, or the belly of a plane, or are smuggled into a city in the middle of the night in a vial in a backpack"

...but back to Bhutto

The best wrap up I can present.. The world was rocked today. The repercussions will be here for a long time to come.. 70 days after Bhutto returns to Pakistan, she gets shot in the neck, chest, and then the assassin blows himself up.. Bush condemned "murderous extremists" today.. Al Qaida leads list of suspects in murder.. Candidates react to her assassination.. Bhutto rose through sunroof for all to see today.. moments later shots rang out.. Bhutto's body flown home.. Fears of chaos grow: Bhutto wrote in October that she would hold Musharraf responsible if she was killed.. Tonight, her supporters are blaming Musharraf.. Bush spoke to Musharraf for about 10 minutes today.. History of Benazir Bhutto.. Civil war feared as mobs demands Musharraf.. AFP PHOTO

HOW BIG IS THIS NEWS?

Very big. After the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan at a brink of disaster. That's probably not understated. The political stability of Pakistan is in question.. United States policy towards the nation will surely have to alter.. General Musharraf will not have some choices. Bhutto had children, and a husband. He was in prison on charges on corruption when she was prime minister of Pakistan. She was also accused of corruption. But the people loved her. She came back from exile this year.. She was made up with makeup often. She was famous. She was intelligent. She was outspoken.. She said she wanted one simple thing: Democracy for Pakistan. She believed that she was the only hope that Pakistan had to bring democracy to the nation. She was well educated. She chose to continue to try to stay in Pakistan despite the attempts on her life and chances she could suffer the fate she suffered today. Her death now will make her a martyr. She died a heroine. The world is watching.. And nervous waiting for the next move. Pakistan has nuclear weapons. And a lot of terrorists. And a lot of anger tonight... As the world turns...

Torture and waterboarding. Big issue now. Democrats have been leading the cause against it.. *Well, and John McCain, who I'd give 1000% more credibility to than anyone else on the issue*..

But in 2002, when Democrats were among top leaders from Congress told about the harsh techniques used to interrogate suspects..

One source told the WASHINGTON POST that at least two in the room wanted the CIA to push harder..

Tillman Intrigue

A stunning article from the Associated Presses makings its way around the world this evening:
"Army medical examiners were suspicious about the close proximity of the three bullet holes in Pat Tillman's forehead and tried without success to get authorities to investigate whether the former NFL player's death amounted to a crime"

"The medical evidence did not match up with the, with the scenario as described," a doctor who examined Tillman's body after he was killed on the battlefield in Afghanistan in 2004 told investigators. The doctors - whose names were blacked out - said that the bullet holes were so close together that it appeared the Army Ranger was cut down by an M-16 fired from a mere 10 yards or so away. Ultimately, the Pentagon did conduct a criminal investigation, and asked Tillman's comrades whether he was disliked by his men and whether they had any reason to believe he was deliberately killed. The Pentagon eventually ruled that Tillman's death at the hands of his comrades was a friendly-fire accident."

DeFazio was quoted, "Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right"..

New book explores the VP of gloom

..Vice President Cheney.. the man who read all... ALL .. intelligence reports. The man who, in a new book, admits a mistake: The U.S. should have let Iraqis govern themselves from the outset.. The new book, "CHENEY," is going to be released this week..

NEWSWEEK with one interesting part of the Cheney book:
You won't find a psychological explanation in Hayes's new book. A writer for the conservative Weekly Standard, Hayes is largely uncritical and essentially buys into the picture of Cheney-as-Stoic, a throwback to an ancient Greek warrior who can see the Fates gathering but grimly and bravely soldiers on. Hayes recounts a scene told to him by David Bohrer, the vice president's official photographer, about Cheney at a Secret Service test-driving track in Beltsville, Md. The Secret Service was teaching Cheney how to drive to evade terrorists by executing a "J-turn." Cheney, who had not driven a car in about two years, jammed the Chevy Camaro into reverse, hit the accelerator until he was going about 40 miles an hour, then slammed on the brakes in order to spin the car a full 180 degrees. Bohrer had mounted a camera on the windshield to record Cheney's face. The veep was expressionless throughout. "It was as if he was taking a Sunday drive," Bohrer told Hayes.
