All the threats
AP: President-Elect Obama has more threats than others..
One of the most popular white supremacist Web sites got more than 2,000 new members the day after the election, compared with 91 new members on Election Day, according to an AP count. The site, stormfront.org, was temporarily off-line Nov. 5 because of the overwhelming amount of activity it received after Election Day. On Saturday, one Stormfront poster, identified as Dalderian Germanicus, of North Las Vegas, said, "I want the SOB laid out in a box to see how 'messiahs' come to rest. God has abandoned us, this country is doomed."

Race to be the first crisis
President-Elect Obama already had to deal with his first mini-crisis: A pretty lame joke about Nancy Reagan that led him to have to say sorry to the Gipper-ess.. But the real crises are yet to begin.. January 20, 2009, he will face numerous tests, namely the most current economic crisis that America and the world are embroiled in.. Not to mention the the billions of dollars that the American auto industry is most likely going to need.. But there's more to face President Obama: Russia is going berserk the with European Union worries about Russian missiles Plus Obama bin Laden may release a videotape just in time for the Obama Administration's first days in charge. . .

Important: This year's turnout was only slightly higher than 2004
Urban legends will abound about this year's voter turnout.. but for the record, turnout was only slightly higher than it was in 2004.. As a matter of fact, lesser Republican numbers led to a smaller number in turnout than what was expected.. In 2004, 122 million Americans voted in the general election. This year, according to the American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate, this year's turnout rose about 1%...

$200 FOR YESTERDAY'S NEWSPAPER!!
The NEW YORK TIMES was ready: They printed 35% more than the usual number of newspapers when Barack Obama was put on the front page as the victor.. But did they envision their paper being sold on Craigslist and eBay for more than $200!?
I'd imagine not.
Newspapers across the country sold out instantly in many places--even local papers saw sales go up. A sudden demand for the old media in a time where the new media led a new generation to vote? Fascinating. There's something about holding that black and white page in front of you in the morning.. something about seeing the news in front of you in your hands when something big in the world happens, or when the world as we know it changes.
You can save websites, but it's not the same as newspapers. They still have a place--even with sales in general are down in big numbers..

Looking at your screen the wrong way may be the only way to make this look good.. The DOW fell nearly 450 points today and has achieved the largest two day drop--ever. NASCAR, WAL-MART, and Central Pennsylvania: McCainiancs come home
The Keystone State of Pennsylvania is interesting. John McCain has been tirelessly campaigning in the state while Democrats stand and scratch their heads with confusion as to why.. McCain has been hoping that his upset victory in 2008 starts with Pennsylvania.. He's been talking non-stop to residents in PA via call, mail, and personal visits. He's been spending a lot of time in places like Pottsville, PA, small towns in Central Pennsylvania, crowds in Hershey PA.. And now the Keystone State has become the Woodstock of the McCain camp.. According to reporting from the Washington POST, people from other states are traveling to Pennsylvania to support their candidate John McCain. McCain is hoping that the same Democrats that led Hillary Clinton to a late spring Pennsylvania win votes for him. PA doesn't have early voting--so he's hoping his supposed 'comeback' helps in the last 48 hours in Pennsylvania.. But I truly doubt it will come down to Pennsylvania. Think of this: PA has 67 counties.. in 2002, Ed Rendell won the state with only the few counties in the extreme Southeast and he dashed any hopes for an African American Republican in PA with a landslide victory over Lynn Swann in 2006. And look at this: County by county in 2004 in Pennsylvania. John Kerry won a mere 13 counties of 67. And he won the state's 21 electoral votes because the counties he won has the biggest population in the state.. For McCain to win PA on Tuesday and score this dramatic upset, the stars may have to align. If get out the vote campaigns are successful in Southeast PA, it would be incomprehensible to think that the midstate or Central PA area can come up with enough votes to surpass Philadelphia and other suburbs of the city.. When Philadelphia votes, so goes the state.. A victory for McCain in Pennsylvania would not only be an upset, but a miracle. Miracles happen..I guess. But rarely. Expect 2008's PA to go for Obama, even if he only wins 19% of the real estate--it's the population in the 19% that matters..

Joe the Plumber vs and Vanessa the state employee

REUTERS/Brian Snyder (UNITED STATES) US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN 2008 (USA)
Some interesting revelations from the state of Ohio ..
"Vanessa Niekamp said that when she was asked to run a child-support check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16, she thought it routine. A supervisor told her the man had contacted the state agency about his case. Niekamp didn't know she just had checked on "Joe the Plumber," who was elevated the night before to presidential politics prominence as Republican John McCain's example in a debate of an average American. The senior manager would not learn about "Joe" for another week, when she said her boss informed her and directed her to write an e-mail stating her computer check was a legitimate inquiry. The reason Niekamp said she was given for checking if there was a child-support case on Wurzelbacher does not match the reason given by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. With three days left (and a LOT of talk about Joe the Plumber to the point that we're all sick of Joe's plumbing) expect to hear a lot more about the interesting tale of whatever occurred in the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services..

Strange poll shows it being .. close??
As a sea of polls are released showing McCain losing by up to 15 points, one week before the election, Gallup comes along and releases a poll showing a 2% point lead for Obama among likely voters..
While this may be a huge deal for Republicans anxious for a bounce a week before the Super-est of Tuesdays, it's worth remembering: 2004's likely voters are not 2008's likely voters.. A bigger base of people coming out this year means these numbers could be skewed too much towards the old 20th century..
For example: Georgia is seeing numbers 36% over 2004's numbers.. Obviously not "likely." Therefore I'm standing by my original prediction from earlier this month..

WASHINGTON POST endorses Barack Obama
Newspaper goes on record..
"The choice is made easy in part by Mr. McCain's disappointing campaign, above all his irresponsible selection of a running mate who is not ready to be president. It is made easy in larger part, though, because of our admiration for Mr. Obama and the impressive qualities he has shown during this long race. Yes, we have reservations and concerns, almost inevitably, given Mr. Obama's relatively brief experience in national politics. But we also have enormous hopes. ... IT GIVES US no pleasure to oppose Mr. McCain. Over the years, he has been a force for principle and bipartisanship. He fought to recognize Vietnam, though some of his fellow ex-POWs vilified him for it. He stood up for humane immigration reform, though he knew Republican primary voters would punish him for it. He opposed torture and promoted campaign finance reform, a cause that Mr. Obama injured when he broke his promise to accept public financing in the general election campaign. Mr. McCain staked his career on finding a strategy for success in Iraq when just about everyone else in Washington was ready to give up. We think that he, too, might make a pretty good president. But the stress of a campaign can reveal some essential truths, and the picture of Mr. McCain that emerged this year is far from reassuring. To pass his party's tax-cut litmus test, he jettisoned his commitment to balanced budgets. He hasn't come up with a coherent agenda, and at times he has seemed rash and impulsive. And we find no way to square his professed passion for America's national security with his choice of a running mate who, no matter what her other strengths, is not prepared to be commander in chief. The POST concludes:
...
"But Mr. Obama's temperament is unlike anything we've seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment."

Feeling blue: 23 and counting.. my election predictions
The election is nasty.. Hateful for some.. But I am going to make my election prediction. Things are changing by the day. But I am predicting an Obama win--actually an Obama landslide, one like we have not seen in several election cycles. With 270 electoral votes needed for victory, I am predicting Obama easily wins the overall popular vote. I also feel he will handily gain the electoral college, which as we all know is the only way to win. My map shows McCain with 201 electoral votes and Obama with 337.. The map:
As you can see, I am predicting McCain loses and Obama wins in the following swing states: Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri.. I also predict an Obama win in North Carolina .. McCain will keep the deep South--but with smaller margins of victory than Bush in 2000 and 2008. McCain will end of losing New Mexico.. Minnesota .. and Indiana.
The next debate is coming up this week .. I don't feel that 2008 will be as divided as previous election, I also do not feel there is any way the electoral college will be tied. Further, there will be no reason for networks to wait late into the night without knowing for sure who won this November's election.
Congress will be controlled by Democrats.. as will the Senate.
It's been a long eight years.. Democrats will gain this year in huge numbers due to the newer younger voters (that will actually vote this year) .. and from two wars, and the sudden impact of the economic crisis. McCain's last minute campaign tactics have been foolish looking. He's all over the proverbial map, issuing policy plans at his own whims during debates and suspending his campaign as a stunt.
It all failed for one simple reason: Campaign officials didn't let John McCain be himself. Instead, they reinvented him as George W. Bush .. That's not why people liked him in 2000. Barack Obama ran one of the greatest campaigns in history, trouncing the likely nominee Hillary Clinton, and dominating TVs, internet, radio, and other forms of media. And he got a lot of free help from major media officials, who often let their own biases outweigh their good sense for reporting. Legs were quivering with excitement all over American newsrooms the night Obama accepted his party's nomination. And they haven't stopped yet.
The tingling, quivering, and excitement will be at record highs on election night. McCain, once a media darling, was crumbled up and thrown into a trash heap like any other piece of paper.
And then what? Politics as usual. Party fighting party. But the victory Obama gets this year will give him a mandate for change.. But McCain's ultimate failure is that all year, he never did anything to tell Americans why he felt Obama's change was wrong for America.. Instead, his aimless twists and turns have led his campaign events into angry give and take sessions with people frightened of Barack Obama..
How sad it got.
We'll check back in a 24 days to see how well I did.
But I strongly believe that this election will not be close..Labels: Biden, Campaign 2008, Election, McCain, Obama, Palin, personal, Politics, Predictions

Self destructive
While I didn't put up my official election prediction yet (that's coming later today), it's clear that if McCain loses this year, it may be due to the overall self-destructive nature of him, Palin, and his own base of supporters.. This week, man at a Palin rally displayed a monkey donning an Obama sticker..CBS offers an interesting account,
"After Palin finished her remarks this morning, the man holding the stuffed monkey seemed to notice that a video camera was pointed at him, at which point he removed the Obama sticker from the doll's head and crumpling it up in his hand. He then handed the doll to a young boy who was watching the rally from his father's shoulders. The boy's parents later told CBS News that they weren't acquainted with the man who gave their son the stuffed monkey"
But the question is this: Is it right for CBS news to display the video it does on its site of this man slowly hiding the monkey.. John McCain has *finally* spoken out against the more vile of anger against Obama.. Or is CBS further inflaming race relations..?

ON WE ON THE VERGE OF THE AGE OF OBAMA?
The big shift has occurred.. all else this year doesn't matter, no Palin, not the conventions.. Only now the debates and the whatever October surprise may be coming.
But if the election stays on the current track, we will be calling Barack Obama President Elect in November..
"Mr. McCain has solid leads in states with 160 electoral votes and is well positioned in states with another 40 electoral votes, according to the Times tally, for a total of 200. Just six states representing 78 electoral votes — Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia — are tossups. Mr. Obama appears to have significantly more options to reach the 270 threshold, particularly if Mr. McCain fails to win any states that Democrats won in 2004, like Pennsylvania, where the Republican ticket has been competing especially vigorouslyThe next month will obviously make or break the campaigns. The perpetual stories on the "October surprise" which .. maybe won't happen this year, who knows? But on the pure level of momentum, the Obama campaign has it. Regardless of your opinion on his candidacy, his marketing campaign has been brilliant. He even has his own coding for iPhones. McCain's team is lagging far behind--just as Obama makes history by advertising on satellite TV.
"Of the four Democratic states where Mr. McCain is competing, his aides said he viewed Pennsylvania — the biggest of them — as offering him the best chance. Mr. Obama lost the Democratic primary there to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton."I just don't see that. I'm from Pennsylvania, too, but I think Obama is safe for Obama..
"That is not a fanciful battle: There are plausible outcomes that would leave the two men with a 269-269 electoral vote tie, forcing the election into the House of Representatives"As someone who watches too much news on TV, I hope for the 269 to 269 vote. The surge is working
..For Obama .. He's gaining in crucial states
"But McCain is in as bad or worse shape in other battleground states. Barring a dramatic change, he is on course to lose Iowa and New Mexico, both states barely won by President Bush four years ago in his narrow victory over Democrat John F. Kerry. And he and the Republican National Committee this week began pouring money into Indiana and North Carolina, reliably Republican states where the Obama campaign has made strong advances and polls indicate the candidates are roughly tied"

We're gonna change it.. rearrange it.. I'm gonna vomit!!
I had major problems with the Jesus Camps for Bush in 2004.. I have major problems with the bandwagon philosophy.. A people as a whole can, and have, do some bad things when they jump on the bandwagon--even when intentions start out as noble. Which is the exact reason the kids below scared me: Does anyone else have a problem with this? Kids singing to Obama as opposed to America? Nothing against Barack.. But believe me, I would have the same trouble with this type of a video if it was for McCain.. This country should not--though it sometimes does--idolize the presidents or leaders that lead it! Instead, it should always proudly wave the flag due to the fact that the Constitution of the United States has set up a system of government that is flawed but still the best in the world.. America should stand up tall for this country.. and not act like Obama is the new king of the world.. I don't care who you're voting for this year.. I don't care who you voted for in past years.. I think this video creeps me out for a number of reasons, and I think we're in a wonderful odd year. I'm enjoying it all, but when I see kids being used in this way, it reminds me a bit of a totalitarian dictatorship. And if they're at the inauguration (presumably if Obama wins) I will be even more fearful.. I find no virtue in worshiping a mortal. He or she is imperfect.. And when that mere mortal gets into office and does the same things that those mere mortals did in the past, where will it leave the kids singing their march for hope song? Will they still bang their drums for Obama? Will they still belt out "yes we can!" ... maybe, if the government makes them. Everyone needs to chill out a bit. Obama is not God. Even though the kids appear to think he is...

A tale of two VPs: Poor Joey B: Saying all the wrong things, our Sarah, just smiling for the camera
Rumors abound: Hillary will be Barack's October surprise!
But that's fiction. Right?
But a few Biden moments may be causing some uneasy moments in the Obama inner circle: Biden says anti-McCain ad was wrong, he said no coal plants in America, and he mentioned FDR led when the stock market crashed, impossible for several reasons..
And in Palinmania news, our Sarah appeared with world leaders for photographers, but not reporters...

NEXT PHASE: THE DEBATES
Get your TV ready.. and if you're bored with the election, you're boring.. The NEW YORK TIMES reporting on the free-wheeling style of debates coming between Obama and McCain, but not Palin and Biden.. The McCain team not thinking our Sarah is ready for a real debate with Biden? According to the TIMES:
"At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.Among other details: Camp Obama wanted the economics debate to come last, being that they believe it's Obama's best issue.. However, the foreign policy debate will be last--presumably McCain's best suit. The TIMES also reporting: "Obama aides also agreed to use lecterns at the first event, which Mr. McCain preferred; at the third debate, the two men will be seated at a round table, in the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions, with the moderator at 6 o’clock.".. Even more: The scar..
McCain aides said that they were conscious of the fact that Mr. McCain has a prominent scar on one side of his face, and that they could not predict how prominent it would appear with the camera angles, lighting and make-up.Few people may realize the amount of debate goes into forming the real debate. Arguments between candidates about the setup and stage occur every four years--often times arguments just for the sake of one side threatening to pull out. But each year, we see our candidates on stage about three times.. For better or worse, we make our choice on how they act. Gore's sighs in 2000 led him to lose, while Kerry's grandiose verbiage caused yawns.. We vote on looks. Kennedy in 1960 looked a lot better than a sweaty Nixon.. Reagan made people laugh in 1984. Clinton bested Dole by looking young.. And now in 2008, Obama vs McCain: The 20th century vs the 21st, on our TV sets of the 20th century, blogged on the net of the 21st, and watched by people of both centuries. A wild election so far, getting wilder and meaner, ready to be in living rooms across America in only days...

Civics die young: What the kids don't know...
Today is the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.. maybe a lot of people don't know that. Dates are tough. .History is filled with them, but a date like September 17, when an event like the signing of the Constitution occurred is kind of important. An opinion written by Sandra Day O'Connor and Lee H. Hamilton appearing today was wonderfully written and somewhat frightening..
With young people voting at higher rates than ever before, it might seem that the founders would be pleased with our progress. Yet civic engagement requires more than voting in presidential elections every four years. A healthy democracy demands sustained citizen participation, and our schools must give students the knowledge and tools to participate. Sadly, civic education has been in steady decline over the past generation, as high-stakes testing and an emphasis on literacy and math dominate school reforms. Too many young people today do not understand how our political system works. They lack the tools to shape their communities through their own participationI have been thinking about this one for a while..Every election cycle we're told young people will vote in huge numbers. Though they failed to do this every time in history that they were supposed to, 2008 may be different.. They are not being polled since they're not likely voters, and they're organized this year more than ever.. But what will students think when their man Obama can't get his agenda passed through a combative Congress? Will they realize that free health care for all won't happen in a year? Will they know that "change" will have to be translated into legislation instead of mere words on a teleprompter? O'Connor and Hamilton are right: We may have taught kids it's important to vote with "Choose or Lose" and "Vote or Die" campaigns from MTV, but in the aftermath of the vote, does it go back to normal? Jaded and cynical? I say yes.. But then I'm jaded. And cynical..

It's not being held today.. you didn't miss anything. But I got polled again tonight, asking me "if the election was held today who would you vote for." Just for fun, I said "Ron Paul!" .. I was hung up on.
But if the election was indeed held today, Electoral-Vote.com says it would be Obama 247 McCain 257

Is John McCain reading this blog?
Probably not.. But there has been a lot of debate lately over whether or not McCain can use the Internet. .Hot Air blog on why he can't type.. hint, he was a prisoner of war for over 5 years..
Related: A new NEWSWEEK poll shows a deadlocked race for the presidency.. According to NEWSWEEK: "Perhaps more troubling for the Obama campaign than the overall head-to-head numbers, however, is the dramatic hardening of McCain's support suggested in the poll. In July, only 39 percent of McCain voters said they supported McCain strongly. By contrast, 71 percent now say they strongly support the Republican nominee. Obama, meanwhile, has seen support increase from his voters, as well, but far less dramatically—67 percent now say they support him strongly, compared to 61 percent in July. Enthusiastic support will prove crucial to both parties in a close election, as voters are more likely to turn out for, give money to and volunteer on behalf of candidates they firmly back"And finally.. UH OH..Obama calls Palin a pig? In a nuanced way.. sorta.. kinda... maybe not
*UPDATED*
Expect to hear this a lot: Obama calls Palin a pig..? In a modern, respectful kind of way... Impress your friends, have the quote before you get the email:
Obama said "You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig." "You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink." "We've had enough of the same old thing."Didn't she compare herself to a pit bull?? One could think Palin's the pig and McCain's the old fish .. one could. And is. A case of not what you hear, but what you hear within it.. The ATLANTIC already writing, "The McCain campaign has little respect for Obama, but they don't think he is stupid. And the only way one can conclude that Obama meant to refer to Gov. Sarah Palin as a pig is to have concluded that Obama is as dumb as a doornail." Tonight, the top story on Drudge is the pig comment, with a photo of Palin.. ABC news reporting more on the Palin/pig/lipstick/Hockeymom/moose killing machine/Gate scandal.. 8 weeks yet? .. really..?

Don't ask, don't tell: The Mac campaigns in Palin country
The amazing race: Palin sticking to the script even as reporters hound her for answers to questions..Team McCain--until the pick of Palin--was fond of those big forums where no questions were off topic.. Nothing was out of bounds.. But John McCain's second string now with Sarah Palin as the pick for VP.. and he's quickly adapting to Palin country and how to win in it..
Obama said today that he's not worried about today's news of Palin's popularity.. A Gallup survey showed McCain leading over Obama among independents, and Republicans more strongly backing the McCain Palin ticket..
The Obama camp said it doesn't believe polls that show women flocking to Palin.. While he doesn't believe it, polls are indeed showing it.
McCain/Palin is beginning to draw record crowds, and now there is even a Sarah Palin action figure..
But while America shifted this week a little towards McCain, the world we live in continues to support Barack Obama in huge numbers.. It's too bad the world doesn't bring any electoral votes to the table...

What not to do when half of America thinks you're a religion you're not
..Say you're in the religion you're not!
A verbal slip-up by Barack Obama has fueled untrue internet rumors about his religious beliefs.. For months, he has been publicly fighting smears that he was secretly a Muslim.. Even when controversy arose about Reverend Wright, Americans polled still believed him to be a Muslim in substantial numbers. FightTheSmears.com was even created by the Obama campaign to combat this and other untrue rumors..
And now it's blown out the window! thanks to the candidate himself! All that hard work.. and now this:
"my Muslim faith"..
It's petty, yes. But as I have believed for some time, people will vote on this, just as they will vote based on false smears against Sarah Palin.
The Washington TIMES reports, "Let's not play games," he said. "What I was suggesting -- you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you're absolutely right that that has not come." Mr. Stephanopoulos interrupted with, "Christian faith." "My Christian faith," Mr. Obama said quickly. "Well, what I'm saying is that he hasn't suggested that I'm a Muslim. And I think that his campaign's upper echelons have not, either. What I think is fair to say is that, coming out of the Republican camp, there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith -- something which I find deeply offensive, and that has been going on for a pretty long time." HAVOC AT THE GOP CONVENTION: WHO WILL ATTEND, WHO WILL CANCEL? McCAIN/PALIN TO GO TO MISSISSIPPI
The Republican party is set to start its convention Monday--just as Hurricane Gustav (and then Hanna) make major headlines in the Gulf of Mexico..
Tonight, as Governor Bobby Jindal says Gustav could be worse than Katrina and Mayor Ray Nagin is telling New Orleans residents to be 'very scared' of Gustav, questions persist as to who will be speaking at GOP convention.. The POLITICO details a scrambled mess .. President George W. Bush, officials say, will most likely not be at the convention.. There are even plans that John McCain may deliver his acceptance speech via satellite..
According to the POLITICO report tonight, McCain was scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech Thursday but now may do so from the devastation zone if the storm hits the U.S. coast with the ferocity feared by forecasters..Labels: Biden, Breaking news, Campaign 2008, Gustav, hurricanes, McCain, Obama, Palin, Politics, Weather

Reactions: Who is Sarah Palin?

Until today, Alasksa Governor Sarah Palin was unknown in the lower 48 states..
The Obama campaign wanted today to be all about Barack.. the speech, the 75,000+ in attendance at Invesco, and the 40 million record viewers watching on television around the world..
But instead of typing and talking about the monumental speech last night given by Obama, the media quickly turned its attention to the world's best kept secret until about 10:50am today: John McCain's vice presidential pick..
The 'hockey mom' and tough governor often took on her own party.. she opposed the bridge to nowhere.. (however, she is until scrutiny in her state now after firing someone that did not fire a state trooper..) .. she also hid her pregnancy from the public until about 8 months.. she opposes abortion--tested by her youngest child, born with down syndrome. She wanted to keep her baby.. Her oldest son enlisted in the military and is headed to Iraq..
Rumors today that John McCain really didn't know Palin.. perhaps it's a surgical strike against the Democrats, a hopeful play in the year everyone wants change.. And the year everyone is talking about that glass ceiling..
Revealed tonight on Hardball, Palin and her husband was a fan of Pat Buchanan back in 1996..
She's a lifelong NRA member.. She was a runner up for beauty queen.. Her husband works in oil. She likes basketball and hockey..
And the world is reacting.. A sampling:

OBAMA'S PROFOUND ROAR: "ENOUGH!"
Labels: Breaking news, Campaign 2008, Election, Obama, Politics

The speech that Obama hopes will make history..
"It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well. That's why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors -- found the courage to keep it alive. The truth is, on issue after issue that would make a difference in your lives – on health care and education and the economy – Senator McCain has been anything but independent. He said that our economy has made "great progress" under this President. He said that the fundamentals of the economy are strong. And when one of his chief advisors – the man who wrote his economic plan – was talking about the anxiety Americans are feeling, he said that we were just suffering from a "mental recession," and that we've become, and I quote, "a nation of whiners." A nation of whiners? Tell that to the proud auto workers at a Michigan plant who, after they found out it was closing, kept showing up every day and working as hard as ever, because they knew there were people who counted on the brakes that they made. Tell that to the military families who shoulder their burdens silently as they watch their loved ones leave for their third or fourth or fifth tour of duty. These are not whiners. They work hard and give back and keep going without complaint. These are the Americans that I know. We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. This too is part of America's promise – the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort. Change means a tax code that doesn't reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it. Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America. I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow. I will cut taxes – cut taxes – for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class. America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for. Not with an economy to fix and cities to rebuild and farms to save. Not with so many families to protect and so many lives to mend. America, we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise – that American promise – and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.
The words that will be said .. the rest will be history..

Biden Flashback: September 10, 2001

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren
As Barack Obama gets ready to speak to the nation, and world, a quote is making its way across the net, Digg, and Stumble.. Joe Biden from 2001, one day before 9/11:
"We will have diverted all that money to address the least likely threat while the real threats come into this country in the hold of a ship, or the belly of a plane, or are smuggled into a city in the middle of the night in a vial in a backpack"

RAINING ON OBAMA'S PARTHENON
Republican candidate John McCain doing his best to try to take the spotlight away from the Obama acceptance speech tonight at Invesco field, Denver..
Rumors have circulated all day of who may be his choice for Vice President.. But the news may not be nearly as exciting as Obama's speech before 80,000 screaming fans..
Tonight, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has abruptly canceled numerous public appearances..
Palenty's stock has been rising within the McCain camp this week.. McCain himself, reports claim, has narrowed his search down to Leiberman, the unlikely, Romney, the conversatives' creepy friend, and Tim Pawlenty, who seems to be angering no one but also exciting anyone..
The McCain camp has also planned an ad blitz tonight--during Obama's speech.. In the ad, the McCain team said, the Republican will 'speak directly' to Obama..Labels: Breaking news, Campaign 2008, Election, McCain, Obama, Pawlenty

ALREADY: MANY MOCKING OBAMA'S SET CHOICE FOR TONIGHT'S SPEECH

It was bound to happen.. I asked yesterday what was the Obama team thinking? Rumors circulated Wednesday that the stage set for the Obama acceptance speech tonight at Invesco Field gave the impression of an ancient Greek temple.. The Parthenon.. Mt Olympus.. One story in the Rocky Mountain News said the "stars were aligned" for the speech tonight.. The McCain camp was quick to mock the choice, New York tabloids piled on.. Murdoch's NY POST began their story this morning, "Democrats will kneel before the "Temple of Obama" tonight. As if a Rocky Mountain coronation were not lofty enough, Barack Obama will aim for Mount Olympus when he accepts his party's nomination atop an enormous, Greek-columned stage - built by the same cheesy set team that put together Britney Spears' last tour. " Stevie Wonder and Cheryl Crow are going to take part in the festival.. Also expect to see John Legend While the set looks Greek, at night it may give off the impression that Obama is standing in front of the White House.. And predictably, according to the Politico, senior Democrats are nervous about the Obama approach to his acceptance speech. Nervous about 80,000 cheering fans, the weather, the stage design, and about the chance that the McCain campaign could use images of the rock star appearance to slam Obama as.. a rock star (like they did a few weeks back).. While the world may be watching tonight, each part of that world will form their own opinion .. And it's not going to be a toga party for everyone..

What is the Obama team thinking!!
Bill Clinton just got done forcefully endorsing Obama, but the Obama campaign is handing McCain 2000 a silver platter filled with gifts! Apparently, the Obama speech stage resembles an ancient Greek temple! Is this the best thing to do when the official Republican attack line is that you're pompous and overdone?

FINALLY!!! RED MEAT!

Bill Clinton coming through again.. as the convention rolls on, finally someone took to the stage and showed the differences between the Republican and Democrat party.. Clinton actually mentioned some bad things about McCain--and mentioned KATRINA! Katrina.. a word that was so easy to bring up but something no Democrats talked about for days now! James Carville will sleep well tonight..
Bill Clinton's simple message, "In this case, the third time is not the charm"..
Clinton's got the magic. And after 16 years, dreamy-eyed Dems are still happy with Bill..

THE OTHER BIDEN ISSUES

Jill Biden: An independent strong woman.. Don't worry: Everyone at some point in the next 48 hours will talk about Biden plagiarism .. History: In 1972, his first wife, Neilia Biden, and 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, were killed when a tractor-trailer broad-sided her station wagon as she drove home with a family Christmas tree. His sons Beau and Hunt were badly hurt.. After the tragic event: He was sworn in from the hospital bed and he still will not work on the day of the accident, December 18.. Biden himself had a close brush with death in February 1988, when he was hospitalized for two brain aneurysms. It was seven months before he could return to the Senate.. And yes.. as he gets older, that hair line seems to come back more and more.. Hair plugs for Biden? I have a feeling that McCain is a little scared of this pick. When the public gets to know Biden, they will like him. .. a lot.
