Sick net: Kid kills himself online.. while thousands watched live on his webcam

Abraham Biggs, 19, of Pembroke Pines, Florida, killed himself. He was a college student at Broward Community College.. And while the news of a teenager committing suicide may not come as a shock, the fact that he did it online may--on his webcam while people watched.. Glued to their computer screens.. Biggs' name was "CandyJunkie" on a bodybuilding website.. He blogged his plans to kill himself.. Police have been in touch with users of the site that have read his previous blogs, blogs that often spoke about killing himself. According to an AP report today, some users who read the blog told investigators they did not take him seriously because he had threatened suicide on the site before.. However, as the AP goes on to say, the Biggs family is angry that the viewers, or the website, acted to save the 19-year-old's life.. Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said: "We regret that this has occurred and want to respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time." The AP:
"Condolences poured in to Biggs' MySpace page, where the mostly unsmiling teen is seen posing in a series of pictures with various young women. On justin.tv, his alias was "feels_like_ecstacy.""
Tonight, the investigation continues into the internet suicide. .Cops are beginning to think that Biggs was egged on by fellow bloggers.. Biggs wrote a posting on a body building forum (*one that has since been taken down, according to ABC NEWS:
"I have let everyone down and I feel as though I will never change or never improve. I am in love with a girl and I know that I am not good enough for her. I have come to believe that my life has all been meaningless. I keep trying and I keep failing. I have thought about and attempted suicide many times in the past"
Biggs took a drug overdose in front of his life Net audience.. Viewers reacted with "OMG" and even LOL when they watched his motionless body on the bed while his webcam continued to stream live.. When police tracked down the address of Biggs' home and now death bed, the webcam shut off.. viewers were able to see the cops show up before the transmission was cut.. The disturbing news of Abraham Biggs' death now national and global news.. Another example of the "kids aren't alright" .. and the Internet being used to showcase it.. In this horrid example, though, the net was shown at its worst.. Users with anonymous names sending messages of glee as a young man killed himself in front of them.. People safely in front of their lifeless monitors encouraging madness.. The kids may not be alright, but neither is the Net..

AOL BOASTS HIGH TRAFFIC DESPITE BLOGGER REVOLT

...Did it take you years to build your website? ...Did your Hometown site on AOL become a hobby? ...Did others look to your site for info on the history of a town? Yes!? Well.. AOL decided shut down its Hometown websites and blogs-- In a cost saving move, AOL decided to rid itself of Hometown sites.. It wrote in September:
"Dear AOL Hometown user, We're sorry to inform you that as of Oct. 31, 2008, AOL® Hometown was shut down permanently. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Sincerely, The AOL Hometown Team "
The Hometown Team.. but without an AOL Hometown site, could there still a team? Several users have responded angrily to the act: One wrote, "I need my files back. This is crap." Another wrote, "It would have been nice to receive some notice" .. Another threatened leave AOL altogether.. One person wrote that they worked hard on their site, which AOL dumped without notification.. One said they are leaving AOL after 17 years .. To be fair, AOL gave customers a month to save their sites or move them before the shutdown took place.. Judging from the readers' reactions since November 6, several people never got 'the memo' .. However, not addressed by AOL has been the fact that if a site was made and the person that made it died, the site went away.. Forever ceasing to exist.. only a memory as the coding got dumped into FTP trash cans at AOL server headquarters.. AOL said the dump of its sites were done as attempts to cut costs.. And now, as angry users that didn't know their Hometown site was going goodbye try to log on, they are redirected to http://www.peopleconnectionblog.com/ .. But interestingly enough, AOL this past week said it is breaking traffic records! .. There may be a big difference between traffic and money.. And I wonder if Randy Falco moved his Hometown site before it was too late..?

Drudgery: SLATE explains why Matt Drudge isn't done

SLATE explains:
"Drudge endures, while imitators and newly minted Web stars fade, for a variety of reasons. He works incredibly hard. He cares about his site. He appears to have no interest in working for somebody else, and his entrepreneurial vigor makes the site come alive. And also because he appreciates something about readers they might not even know themselves: They want an information site that would rather err on the side of recklessness once in a while than be right all the time"

The Google sickness: Tracking when you search for the flu

Sick? Coughing? Vomiting? Maybe stay quiet!
GOOGLE launched a new site called Google Flutrends in which is seems set out to prove and show where the flu and what areas have it.
While the eventuality of technology is always existent, it's even more interesting to note that Google is going to notify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in real time!
GOOGLE FLU TRENDS will keep the information on who is searching confidential.. Google says. Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt notes: "From a technological perspective, it is the beginning"

Once again ... "thanks" Google.

Freedom won't be stolen, it will be given away.

FOX NEWS: At a crossroads

President-Elect Obama held his first press conference yesterday *(and yes, insulted Nancy Reagan, but he said sorry..)* . .but even more interesting was the fact that Mr. Obama cut out questions completely from FOX NEWS, the long hated network that liberals and Democrats felt was overly kind to President Bush..

I got the election prediction pretty correct.. and let me state for the record my thoughts on the future of FOX: I believe they will become quite fair to President Obama, once he takes office and heads the nation. Something just tells me that. I could be wrong, and they may continue to be conservative friendly.. but we need a network that is, right? MSNBC has gone to the left.. FOX NEWS has gone to the right.. And we're left, again, with CNN pretty much maintaining the sense of newsworthy unbiased reporting (sometimes) that they try to do.. We'll see how everything transpires, but I think FOX will take a lesson from the dramatic results last week: Ratings first.. Country second. Right? After all, profit is America. And this is America..

$200 FOR YESTERDAY'S NEWSPAPER!!

The NEW YORK TIMES was ready: They printed 35% more than the usual number of newspapers when Barack Obama was put on the front page as the victor.. But did they envision their paper being sold on Craigslist and eBay for more than $200!?

I'd imagine not.

Newspapers across the country sold out instantly in many places--even local papers saw sales go up. A sudden demand for the old media in a time where the new media led a new generation to vote? Fascinating. There's something about holding that black and white page in front of you in the morning.. something about seeing the news in front of you in your hands when something big in the world happens, or when the world as we know it changes.

You can save websites, but it's not the same as newspapers. They still have a place--even with sales in general are down in big numbers..

Major: Conservative talk show host backs Barack Obama

Philadelphia conservative talk show host Michael Smerconish endorses Obama ...
""John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I’m voting for a Democrat for president. "I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amidst the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia," says the Republican."

Radio bosses angry?

WASHINGTON POST endorses Barack Obama

Newspaper goes on record..
"The choice is made easy in part by Mr. McCain's disappointing campaign, above all his irresponsible selection of a running mate who is not ready to be president. It is made easy in larger part, though, because of our admiration for Mr. Obama and the impressive qualities he has shown during this long race. Yes, we have reservations and concerns, almost inevitably, given Mr. Obama's relatively brief experience in national politics. But we also have enormous hopes. ... IT GIVES US no pleasure to oppose Mr. McCain. Over the years, he has been a force for principle and bipartisanship. He fought to recognize Vietnam, though some of his fellow ex-POWs vilified him for it. He stood up for humane immigration reform, though he knew Republican primary voters would punish him for it. He opposed torture and promoted campaign finance reform, a cause that Mr. Obama injured when he broke his promise to accept public financing in the general election campaign. Mr. McCain staked his career on finding a strategy for success in Iraq when just about everyone else in Washington was ready to give up. We think that he, too, might make a pretty good president. But the stress of a campaign can reveal some essential truths, and the picture of Mr. McCain that emerged this year is far from reassuring. To pass his party's tax-cut litmus test, he jettisoned his commitment to balanced budgets. He hasn't come up with a coherent agenda, and at times he has seemed rash and impulsive. And we find no way to square his professed passion for America's national security with his choice of a running mate who, no matter what her other strengths, is not prepared to be commander in chief.
...
The POST concludes:
"But Mr. Obama's temperament is unlike anything we've seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment."

There's no place like Wasilla

Reaction to the Biden Palin debate has been fully aired on TV, radio, and Internet all day--plus on factory floors and around office water coolers across America. Judging from ratings of the event, lots of people got the chance to talk about the debate today. Record setting. The overall rating of BidenPalin: 45.0, which means 45% of all TV households in the country tuned in. The Neilsons off the charts; 69,989,000 viewers. The most viewed since the PerotBushClinton debate in 1992. The biggest vice presidential debate--of all time. And higher ratings than Obama vs McCain.. Today, the Barracuda from Wasilla has taken the fight against the media--perhaps McCain's last best hope to energize the base .. a base smaller this year as target markets have been registered to vote in record masses by the Obama campaign..

What not to do when half of America thinks you're a religion you're not

..Say you're in the religion you're not! A verbal slip-up by Barack Obama has fueled untrue internet rumors about his religious beliefs.. For months, he has been publicly fighting smears that he was secretly a Muslim.. Even when controversy arose about Reverend Wright, Americans polled still believed him to be a Muslim in substantial numbers. FightTheSmears.com was even created by the Obama campaign to combat this and other untrue rumors.. And now it's blown out the window! thanks to the candidate himself! All that hard work.. and now this: "my Muslim faith".. It's petty, yes. But as I have believed for some time, people will vote on this, just as they will vote based on false smears against Sarah Palin. The Washington TIMES reports,
"Let's not play games," he said. "What I was suggesting -- you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you're absolutely right that that has not come." Mr. Stephanopoulos interrupted with, "Christian faith." "My Christian faith," Mr. Obama said quickly. "Well, what I'm saying is that he hasn't suggested that I'm a Muslim. And I think that his campaign's upper echelons have not, either. What I think is fair to say is that, coming out of the Republican camp, there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith -- something which I find deeply offensive, and that has been going on for a pretty long time." POLITICO SLAMS MCCAIN: HE'S DESPERATE

PEOPLE magazine placing the McCains and Palins on the cover.. the new happy family of politics.. Maybe.. but I noticed watching the talking heads that, for even those that really dislike VPILF candidate Sarah Palin, they are having lots of trouble being critical. Being very careful.. Besides Keith Olbermann.. The POLITICO this morning issues a hit on McCain's motives, calling the once declared maverick 'desperate'.. Authors Jim VandeHei and John F. Harris explain the six things that the Palin pick says about McCain: He's desperate; he's willing to gamble — bigtime; he's worried about the political implications of his age; he's not worried about the actuarial implications of the age issue, he's worried about his conservative base; and at the end of the day, "McCain is still McCain," marching to his own beat.. But on the heels of Obama's convention address, the most amazing political speech since Lincoln addressed Gettysburg during war, McCain needed some good press. Sure, he only met Palin once or twice, and sure, maybe her husband is not even a Republican, and sure, maybe she wasn't quite sure what a Vice President did.. And for a candidate that just turned 72 trying to distance himself from George W. Bush, what could be better than a PEOPLE magazine cover with his new attractive young Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin?

NO BULL: RED BULL WARNING

A study of 30 college students aged between 20 and 24-years-old found that drinking just one 250ml sugar-free can of the caffeinated energy drink increased the risk of blood clots! MORE According to Australian researchers: By drinking one can, the college participants had shown a 'cardiovascular profile similar to that of someone with heart disease'.. The American media has largely ignored the study.. the British media has gone hard on it, putting it on front pages and high on websites.. The INDEPENDENT, the TELEGRAPH, REUTERS.. UPDATE: JOHN EDWARDS SAYS HE'S NOT THE FATHER

The political world was rocked today when John Edwards admitted he had a relationship with a filmmaker in 2006 .. Though the National Enquirer photographed Edwards recently at a Vegas hotel, Edwards didn't produce an explanation as to why he went back to see the filmmaker--and hold a child that he claims is not his. MORE Not his child.. But his relationship.. His wife has terminal cancer. And the band played on.. John Edwards began his campaign for president before his campaign of denials in the Rielle Hunter scandal.. Edwards denied the story in October 2007, and just weeks ago when he said 'supermarket tabloids' didn't know what they are talking about. They did. And now the convention slot for Edwards is gone, I think.. the chances for Vice President, and the faith of all the youth that volunteered time and money when he was running for president. While debate rages whether the Edwards story has importance or if it's just a Friday media feeding frenzy, the truth lays within Edwards' heart--and within his family. A family reeling as news now circles around the world.. Another politician. Another scandal. Another denial. And another tabloid ending up being right.... AP PHOTO

Should the bloggers stop blogging?

Citizen journalists, reporters, photographers, and online opinion writers unite: Former NBC correspondent has written an in-depth article about how blogging and internet reporters are bad for the health of real reporters.. David Hazinski writes, "reliable information that the traditional media don't provide. While it has its place, the reality is it really isn't journalism at all, and it opens up information flow to the strong probability of fraud and abuse. The news industry should find some way to monitor and regulate this new trend." Perhaps the real reporters should be monitored.. In the land before the net, it was tough to get news. They chose it for you. They picked and combed through what they felt was important. Now with access to news wires around the world you can see what happens oceans away in the click of a mouse.. With hurricane and storm dedicated weather sites you can watch live radar.. You can watch earthquake seismic graphs live when quakes occur. You can see streaming live footage of events, towns, cities.. you can watch your favorite or most infamous presidential candidates talk and walk with You Tube. And what is so wrong with this? Mr. Hazinksi goes on to say,
"• They should clarify and reinforce their own standards and work through trade organizations to enforce national standards so they have real meaning. • Journalism schools such as mine at the University of Georgia should create mini-courses to certify citizen journalists in proper ethics and procedures, much as volunteer teachers, paramedics and sheriff's auxiliaries are trained and certified. In this lone blogger's humble opinion, Mr. Hazinski should be honored. Real bloggers that don't just report rumors actually check their facts in the same tradition that "real" reporters do--err.. once did. (Remember, there are also websites out there soley dedicated to finding when real reporters make errors.) Many bloggers or "citizen reporters" troll the AP news wire, the Reuters Photo wire, CNN's political ticker, the Drudge Report, Huffington Post, the UK NEWSNOW live news site.. They're not just pulling facts from the air and putting it on blogs for all to see--though I am sure more than few do that. But there are also a few, and hopefully not more than a few, reporters that get their facts wrong. Jayson Blair from the New York TIMES could let us in on a few secrets.. The internet brings out one characteristic in reporting that some reporters say should not happen: Opinion laced news accounts. But then again, if you really read the real newspapers and magazine of the 20th century, you will find they lace their articles with more highbrowed opinions. Their opinions are better, most likely because their paid-for-degree was enough to tell them how to gather the facts first and then flush their articles with hidden opinions. Maybe in the end, the think that Mr. Hazinki most overlooks is the 21st century marriage of journalism and entertainment. Paris Hilton.. oh my. Britney Spears.. and her kids. Oh boy. The advertising.. drug company sponsorship of major news programs .. Those boardrooms have some interesting meetings. While there are some blogs and citizen sites paid for by advertising revenue, the vast majority of all that post their notes online are not getting rich by their actions.. The Schmuckraker blog dropped the dotcom over a year ago because it was getting too expensive without advertising dollars to keep a site going. But the Blogger.com help led to a cheaper and faster way of reporting. I just don't think I own my stuff anymore.. right? But hey, you can take your words with you when you're gone I guess. So back to Mr. Hazinki: He concludes, "on freedom of the press and journalism shouldn't be regulated. But we have already seen the line between news and entertainment blur enough to destroy significant credibility. Continuing to do nothing as information flow changes will further erode it. Journalism organizations who choose to do nothing may soon find the line between professional and citizen journalism gone as well as the trust of their audiences." The line between professional and citizen journalist .. gone. Perhaps that's fine. I'd rather see the line between entertainment and news stop being blurred. I'd rather see a news show without sponsorship of a major global company .. I'd rather see journalists not worried more about their hair than they are about the words a politician is spewing. When I first started to really care about world events, read TIME magazine, and become a CNN junkie, I was about 12 or 13. And it always bothered me that when a major news story happened, life then seemed to go on. Few sources were around to get background info on what was happening at that moment. The net has given way to anyone to possess the ability to report from where they want to, how they want to, and what they want to. From do-it-yourself sex sites to blogging by iPhones.. it's America in 2007. It's the modern evolution of journalism.. and how people get their news. It's time to get used to it. Remember, Mr. Hazinski, those news wires are still flowing. It's the information age. With that comes challenges .. and information overloads. But it's better than information blackouts.
