Proposition 8 success: California state constitution can now be amended to ban gay marriage
Voters in California went for Barack Obama by 61%--but the same turnout of African Americans hugely supported Prop 8 by about 70%.. With the passage of Proposition 8, the state constitution in California can now be amended to put an official ban on gay marriage. It would be law--and thus take away the ability for courts to continue to allow gay marriages.. Protests in Los Angelas as police say they are prepared for whatever happens.. The California state Attorney General says that gays that already married in California are valid--but of course this now heads to court. Andrew Sullivan on the story..

WASHINGTON POST endorses Barack Obama
Newspaper goes on record..
"The choice is made easy in part by Mr. McCain's disappointing campaign, above all his irresponsible selection of a running mate who is not ready to be president. It is made easy in larger part, though, because of our admiration for Mr. Obama and the impressive qualities he has shown during this long race. Yes, we have reservations and concerns, almost inevitably, given Mr. Obama's relatively brief experience in national politics. But we also have enormous hopes. ... IT GIVES US no pleasure to oppose Mr. McCain. Over the years, he has been a force for principle and bipartisanship. He fought to recognize Vietnam, though some of his fellow ex-POWs vilified him for it. He stood up for humane immigration reform, though he knew Republican primary voters would punish him for it. He opposed torture and promoted campaign finance reform, a cause that Mr. Obama injured when he broke his promise to accept public financing in the general election campaign. Mr. McCain staked his career on finding a strategy for success in Iraq when just about everyone else in Washington was ready to give up. We think that he, too, might make a pretty good president. But the stress of a campaign can reveal some essential truths, and the picture of Mr. McCain that emerged this year is far from reassuring. To pass his party's tax-cut litmus test, he jettisoned his commitment to balanced budgets. He hasn't come up with a coherent agenda, and at times he has seemed rash and impulsive. And we find no way to square his professed passion for America's national security with his choice of a running mate who, no matter what her other strengths, is not prepared to be commander in chief. The POST concludes:
...
"But Mr. Obama's temperament is unlike anything we've seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment."

Revealed: Pope was stabbed in 1982
"On May 12, 1982, the pope was visiting the shrine city of Fatima in Portugal to give thanks for surviving a first assassination attempt a year earlier on May 13, 1981, when he was shot in St Peter's Square by Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca. A crazed ultra-conservative Spanish priest, Juan Fernandez Krohn, lunged at the pope with a dagger and was knocked to the ground by police and arrested. The fact that the knife actually reached the pope and cut him was not known until now. "I can now reveal that the Holy Father was wounded. When we got back to the room (in the Fatima sanctuary complex) there was blood," Dziwisz says in the documentary

ABC NEWS: NSA Eavesdropping on Americans--even during phone sex
ABC news reported exclusively this week that the NSA eavesdropped on hundreds of American citizens as they called home.. Sometimes, they even listened in during phone sex, according to one:
"Faulk says he and others in his section of the NSA facility at Fort Gordon routinely shared salacious or tantalizing phone calls that had been intercepted, alerting office mates to certain time codes of "cuts" that were available on each operator's computer. "Hey, check this out," Faulk says he would be told, "there's good phone sex or there's some pillow talk, pull up this call, it's really funny, go check it out. It would be some colonel making pillow talk and we would say, 'Wow, this was crazy'," Faulk told ABC News. Faulk said he joined in to listen, and talk about it during breaks in Back Hall's "smoke pit," but ended up feeling badly about his actions. "I feel that it was something that the people should not have done. Including me," he said. "President Bush said that this was not happening nor would it. If the ABC report is to believed, it did.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVES BOEHNER AND BLUNT TELL HOUSE REPUBLICANS THAT THEY SUPPORT THE BAILOUT BILL..
Boehner tells press he is not sure how House GOPs will vote...
Labels: bailouts, Banks, Breaking news, Economy, mortgage, recession

RAW INFO: SUMMARY OF THE BAILOUT BILL
SUMMARY OF THE EMERGENCY ECONOMIC STABILIZATION ACT OF 2008 I. Stabilizing the Economy The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA) provides up to $700 billion to the Secretary of the Treasury to buy mortgages and other assets that are clogging the balance sheets of financial institutions and making it difficult for working families, small businesses, and other companies to access credit, which is vital to a strong and stable economy. EESA also establishes a program that would allow companies to insure their troubled assets. II. Homeownership Preservation EESA requires the Treasury to modify troubled loans – many the result of predatory lending practices – wherever possible to help American families keep their homes. It also directs other federal agencies to modify loans that they own or control. Finally, it improves the HOPE for omeowners program by expanding eligibility and increasing the tools available to the Department of Housing and Urban Development to help more families keep their homes. III. Taxpayer Protection Taxpayers should not be expected to pay for Wall Street's mistakes. The legislation requires companies that sell some of their bad assets to the government to provide warrants so that taxpayers will benefit from any future growth these companies may experience as a result of participation in this program. The legislation also requires the President to submit legislation that would cover any losses to taxpayers resulting from this program from financial institutions. IV. No Windfalls for Executives Executives who made bad decisions should not be allowed to dump their bad assets on the government, and then walk away with millions of dollars in bonuses. In order to participate in this program, companies will lose certain tax benefits and, in some cases, must limit executive pay. In addition, the bill limits "golden parachutes" and requires that unearned bonuses be returned. V. Strong Oversight Rather than giving the Treasury all the funds at once, the legislation gives the Treasury $250 billion immediately, then requires the President to certify that additional funds are needed $100 billion, then $350 billion subject to Congressional disapproval). The Treasury must report on the use of the funds and the progress in addressing the crisis. EESA also establishes an oversight Board so that the Treasury cannot act in an arbitrary manner. It also establishes a special inspector general to protect against waste, fraud and abuse

BAILOUT DEAL: HAVE WE BEEN SAVED?Newt Gingrich calls for the resignation of Henry Paulson..
Republicans in the House have expressed ongoing concerns over the bailout package -- there is now a chance that the bailout bill may not pass in bi-partisan fashion.. Nancy Pelosi may have to push the bill through with Democrats leading the way, something that she didn't want to do..
-------------------------
In the early morning hours, Congress and Treasury Secretary Paulson heroically walked to the press and announced that there has been a constructive and tentative agreement made that all can swallow and the White House could like. Aides stayed up all night writing up the plans, printing the plans, and getting the copies ready for consumption by lawmakers and media.. The breakthrough bailout bill will reportedly do a few things: Treasury will be permitted to purchase $700 billion in bad debt.. the bill will include pay limits for executives.. And Congress will make efforts to prevent home foreclosures. According to the New York TIMES this morning, "In some cases, the government would receive an equity stake in companies that seek aid, allowing taxpayers to profit should the rescue plan work and the private firms flourish in the months and years ahead." Nancy Pelosi is being credited with last minute talks that led to the breakthrough between House Republicans that didn't want this bill and everyone else that did. Though there is a bailout today: The GUARDIAN is still loving the moment of the "shattering" of the American economy. The plan still has to be voted on by Congress, though it appears through the leaders' words that passage is presumable. But when it does pass, the next obvious act will be to watch the results. Will the markets stabilize or will they continue to fall apart? Will more banks fail? Will more people be able to pay mortgages, or just the opposite? The risky gamble of $700 billion seems to be upon us. And if Congress votes yes (which it looks like they very well may) the results on the economy will be closely watched..

TOXIC MILK MOUSTACHES IN CHINA: DOING BODIES NOT SO GOOD
A crisis of epic proportions taking place in China, as a tainted milk scandal becomes worse by the day.. As expected.. a dismal day on Wall Street
Several publications calling it the "nightmare on Wall Street".. Regardless of bad pun, it was a punishing day. . dark bars await stock exchangers in New York City tonight.. A few rounds on .. who? Not Merrill Lynch.. Not Bank of America, their funds are tied up .. not AIG.. they may be next. Perhaps everyone can get together, pinch a penny, and buy Lehman Brothers a few shots .. Their shot of reality hurt on Wall Street today. The Market was hit hard in a Monday meltdown: More than 500 points down, more than 4% down.. the worst day since the attacks of 9/11.. Candidates are in blame mode. Banks are in fear mode. Consumers are in confused mode.. A few links.. hopefully helpful in making the bleak situation at least understandable.. but most likely not less bleak: Last night the meltdown occurred with Lehman Brothers: Tonight AIG is looking for money to survive.. Bloody Sunday: Meltdown of Lehman Brothers possible before midnight tonight .. Greenspan says we're in a 'once in a century' event
How timely .. Those who may know me know I am holding down two jobs and also going to school full time (not to mention keeping edit over the Schmuckraker.com website) .. and tomorrow, at school, I am going to take my microeconomics midterm exam..
Tonight, however, everyone may get a quick lesson in macroeconomic studies. For days, rumors and rumblings have abounded in economic circles that Lehman Brothers is in some serious trouble -- for days talks have taken place aimed at selling the investment bank in whole or part. The sticking point has been the Bush Administration's refusal to bail out Lehman Brothers like it did Bear Stearns last March.
But apparently talks have broken down as to how to save Lehman.. A bloody Sunday set to evolve tonight as investors are prepared for a potential Lehman bankruptcy--possibly before midnight.
Bank of America and Barclays Plc have pulled out of talks to buy Lehman Brothers, hence the potential collapse.
Lehman Brothers is 158 years old, and serves financial needs of corporations, governments, municipalities, institutional clients, and high net worth individuals..

HOW MUCH DAMAGE? THE MORNING AFTER IKE

AP Photo/David J. Phillip
While Hurricane Ike is far from finished damaging Texas and Louisiana, the area of Galveston, Texas, has been hit hard by the massive monster that came from the Gulf of Mexico.. Ike's eye traveled over Galveston around 2:10am CDT Saturday.. Even at this current hour, rescue workers are being inundated with calls from people in distress--calls that cannot be acted on in many cases. Warnings for days called for "certain death" and for social security numbers to be written on arms, yet thousands of people in Galveston and other communities in the bulls eye stayed in an attempt to ride out the storm.. Gas prices are up to $5.50 in Texas and Florida.. many gas stations are closed.. The extent of the damage from Ike is still to be assessed.. Many are fearing what could have happened to the thousands of people that chose to ride out the storm.. The low-line communities were faced during the early morning hours with a wall of water, high storm surge, 110 mph winds and gusts to 130mph.. Reports from various news sources that 4 million plus are without power--and this power could be off for several weeks to come.. MORE: The AP reporting today,
"Massive Hurricane Ike ravaged southeast Texas early Saturday, battering the coast with driving rain and ferocious wind gusts as residents who decided too late they should have heeded calls to evacuate made futile calls for rescue"Authorities are bracing for the worst.. The storm is poised to take turn towards Arkansas later today.. President Bush due to make news statement this morning.. DIRE WARNING: NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS "CERTAIN DEATH" COMING

A stark, dire, and deadly warning tonight from the National Weather Service.. The Galveston warning from the NWS:
"LIFE THREATENING INUNDATION LIKELY! ALL NEIGHBORHOODS... AND POSSIBLY ENTIRE COASTAL COMMUNITIES... WILL BE INUNDATED DURING THE PERIOD OF PEAK STORM TIDE. PERSONS NOT HEEDING EVACUATION ORDERS IN SINGLE FAMILY ONE OR TWO STORY HOMES WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH. MANY RESIDENCES OF AVERAGE CONSTRUCTION DIRECTLY ON THE COAST WILL BE DESTROYED. WIDESPREAD AND DEVASTATING PERSONAL PROPERTY DAMAGE IS LIKELY ELSEWHERE. VEHICLES LEFT BEHIND WILL LIKELY BE SWEPT AWAY. NUMEROUS ROADS WILL BE SWAMPED... SOME MAY BE WASHED AWAY BY THE WATER. ENTIRE FLOOD PRONE COASTAL COMMUNITIES WILL BE CUTOFF. WATER LEVELS MAY EXCEED 9 FEET FOR MORE THAN A MILE INLAND. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN MULTI-STORY FACILITIES RISK BEING CUTOFF. CONDITIONS WILL BE WORSENED BY BATTERING WAVES. SUCH WAVES WILL EXACERBATE PROPERTY DAMAGE... WITH MASSIVE DESTRUCTION OF HOMES... INCLUDING THOSE OF BLOCK CONSTRUCTION. DAMAGE FROM BEACH EROSION COULD TAKE YEARS TO REPAIR.Families not heeding warning tonight in Galveston.. facing certain death.. Looking at the size and possible strength of Hurricane Ike, certain death may indeed be likely for anyone sticking around trying to ride out the storm.. Though forecasters are still calling for a Cat 3 power storm when it hits land, disorientation tonight seems to have caused some weakening of the massive storm. Debate in weather circles tonight of whether or not Ike will make history.. The bottom line tonight is that a major hurricane is coming to Texas, most likely around Galveston, and deadly conditions will quickly occur. Certain death..

SERIOUS CONCERN OVER LEVEES

The amount of rain that Gustav will produce is causing fear inside FEMA and Homeland Security.. The situation in Louisiana is dire.. Grand Isle may be in the eye of the storm.. Gustav is tracking a little more Northwest at this hour, staying longer over water--warm water in the Gulf of Mexico, allowing it to keep its strength pretty steady over the past few hours.. Gustav is going to be a massive rainmaker.. Concerns this Labor Day 2008 over levees that may break...

Bush have warned of dire circumstances at this critical time before Gustav comes on land.. While people along the Gulf Coast fear what oculd happen once Gustav comes on land, FEMA is eager to show America and the world what it says it learned since Katrina three years ago. LATEST GUSTAV GUIDANCE FROM THE NWS
THE NEW GUIDANCE RUNS SHOW A SLIGHT LEFT TURN AFTER 12 HR WITH A LEFTWARD SHIFT IN THE LANDFALL POINT ON THE LOUISIANA COAST. THE NEW FORECAST TRACK WILL NOT FOLLOW THIS SHIFT YET...AND THUS LIES NEAR THE EASTERN EDGE OF THE GUIDANCE ENVELOPE AND THE PREVIOUS FORECAST TRACK THROUGH 48 HR. AFTER 48-72 HR...THERE IS MAJOR DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN THE DYNAMICAL MODELS ON WHETHER GUSTAV WILL RECURVE INTO THE WESTERLIES...STALL OVER LOUISIANA OR TEXAS...OR TURN SOUTHWESTWARD. SINCE THIS KIND OF SPREAD FREQUENTLY PRECEDES SLOW MOTION...THE FORECAST TRACK WILL CALL FOR A SLOW WESTWARD MOTION AFTER 72 HR.

Hockey moms and soccer moms unite? The possibilities of Palin
AP Photo/Heath Family
Now that America is getting to know Sarah Palin--and quite possibly John McCain is getting to know her, too--questions are arising along with a certain pop-cultural "VPILF" pile-on online..
McCain seems to have chosen Palin on a gut instinct.. Not knowing her, he had to rely on what he knew about her, or at least what he was told about her..
I envision a sort of awkward meeting.. perhaps he's not too sure what to think of this strange-accented Northern gun-toating snowmobiling 'hot' Governor-ess from a state very few people even think about when the speak of "America." It's a huge gamble..
Did she get vetted? The PEOPLE magazine cover this week on the new McCain/Palin team looked strange .. McCain seems able to 'strange up' any situation he's in, though. He looked like a proud grandfather at a baptism for his grandchild.. Palin the happy mom of 5.. The risky gamble..
State politicians up in the North are stunned at the Palin choice, too.. State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.. "She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"
And Lyda Green is a Republican!
And a reader of Andrew Sullivan notes a fact: The pop cultural appeal of Palin is already ongoing.. I wrote of that the day of her pick..
I also read one story in which the author mentioned that McCain "fingered" the Alaska governor for his VP choice.. .. perhaps now that we have a female Vice President it may be necessary to watch the verbs we choose? Be careful, editors...Labels: Breaking news, Campaign 2008, Election, McCain, Palin, Politics

GUSTAV: POTENTIALLY DEVASTATING

Gustav is winding up in the Gulf.. preparations are underway across the South.. Hurricane hunters watching for signs of the big storm becoming a Cat 5, something that is now expected in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.. Gustav's impact: Tides reaching at least 9-12 feet above normal and winds potentially of Category 3 status, or at least 111 mph, as it slams into the coastline of the Gulf.. Widespread flooding expected.. 6 to 12 inches of rain. .low line areas will be affected by the massive rains .. there will also be isolated tornadoes.. Tonight's hurricane watch statement to New Orleans appears eerily similar to Katrina three short years ago:
"A POTENTIAL STORM SURGE OF 15 TO 20 FEET WILL BE POSSIBLE NEAR AND TO THE RIGHT OF LOCATION OF LANDFALL OF HURRICANE GUSTAV. A STORM SURGE OF THIS MAGNITUDE COULD RESULT IN EXTENSIVE FLOODING AND POSE A THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS WILL POTENTIALLY IMPACT COASTAL AREAS OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA DURING THE PRE DAWN HOURS MONDAY MORNING AND SPREAD INLAND ACROSS SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND ACROSS COASTAL MISSISSIPPI MONDAY MORNING. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG PORTIONS OF THE COAST BY MID MONDAY MORNING AND SPREAD INLAND TO SOME AREAS MONDAY AFTERNOON AND MONDAY NIGHT"

HAVOC AT THE GOP CONVENTION: WHO WILL ATTEND, WHO WILL CANCEL? McCAIN/PALIN TO GO TO MISSISSIPPI
The Republican party is set to start its convention Monday--just as Hurricane Gustav (and then Hanna) make major headlines in the Gulf of Mexico..
Tonight, as Governor Bobby Jindal says Gustav could be worse than Katrina and Mayor Ray Nagin is telling New Orleans residents to be 'very scared' of Gustav, questions persist as to who will be speaking at GOP convention.. The POLITICO details a scrambled mess .. President George W. Bush, officials say, will most likely not be at the convention.. There are even plans that John McCain may deliver his acceptance speech via satellite..
According to the POLITICO report tonight, McCain was scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech Thursday but now may do so from the devastation zone if the storm hits the U.S. coast with the ferocity feared by forecasters..Labels: Biden, Breaking news, Campaign 2008, Gustav, hurricanes, McCain, Obama, Palin, Politics, Weather

Parades across America as New Orleans evacuates
Three years after Katrina devastated Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and other areas in the South, New Orleans is feeling deju vu all over again. Late Saturday Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans, the city most destroyed by Katrina's force in 2005.. And now today, as America celebrates Labor Day weekend with parades and streamers, millions across the South prepare for what could be a will most likely become an intense and dangerous Category 5 hurricane.. Aimed for somewhere along the Gulf Coast.. MORE: Thousands flee powerful storm.. At this hour, FEMA waiting for storm to blow into Cat 5 Destroys parts of Cuba, now in open Gulf water.. * * * Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal warned that Gustav could be worse that Hurricane Katrina three years ago.. Jindal is requesting a 'pre-landfall' disaster declaration..

Latest GUSTAV discussion..
NONE OF THE MODELS HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED THEIR TRACK SOLUTION COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS CYCLE...SO THE CONSENSUS HAS REMAINED IN PLACE. THE SPREAD AT 3-5 DAYS IS STILL SUBSTANTIAL...HOWEVER...WITH SOME MODELS INCLUDING THE UKMET AND HWRF CALLING FOR GUSTAV TO TURN WESTWARD JUST BEFORE REACHING THE NORTHERN GULF COAST. THE NEW OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK REMAINS CONSISTENT WITH THE REMAINING GUIDANCE IN TAKING GUSTAV INLAND IN LESS THAN 72 HOURS...AND IS JUST EDGED EVER SO SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT...IN PART TO ACCOUNT FOR THE RECENT RIGHT OF TRACK MOTION. REGARDLESS OF THE DETAILS IN THE TRACK...GUSTAV WILL LIKELY SLOW DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE LONGER-TERM...WHICH COULD CAUSE A CONSIDERABLE FLOODING THREAT OVER LOUISIANA AND TEXAS

'NO SHELTER' FOR THOSE THAT STAY IN NEW ORLEANS
We can only hope and pray that the path of Gustav will keep New Orleans out of the most harm (*although looking at long range models, Hanna may also be a fear*).. but today we are learning that those who stay in New Orleans during Gustav will have on shelter .. Police with bullhorns going through the streets of the city this weekend announcing that if you don't leave now, there will be no shelter, you are on your own.. The doors of the Superdome are going to be locked this time around.

GUSTAV EXPLODING IN GULF; THOUSANDS EVACUATING FROM NEW ORLEANS, OTHER CITIES; UNCERTAIN PATH AS NEW COMPUTER MODELS COME IN

PHOTO: AFP
Weather is not an exact science, but when you are just getting over a major hurricane three years ago and see another on the horizon, you want exact..New computer models are showing a frighteningly strengthening Gustav in the Gulf.. Exploding into a powerful category 3 storm--some weather forecasters expect a cat 4 before it's over, a few have worried aloud that a Cat 5 storm may not be out of the question. President Bush has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana--and Texas. The latest projected path shows landfall 2am Tuesday Southwest of New Orleans--however new models shown on the Weather Channel this morning show a curve at the last minute away from the United States and back South into the Gulf! Possibly strengthening even more.. As the storms gets stronger, nonessential oil workers in the Gulf have been evacuated.. Worries over $4 a gallon gas for Labor Day--even $5 a gallon if the storm hits Gulf oil fields and causes widespread damage.. And it's not over after Gustav--Hanna is next. And "Ike" is in its making off the coast of Africa.. Ladies and gentlemen, and readers of all shapes and sizes: Gas up the cars before Tuesday. This could get bad...

GUSTAV A DANGEROUS HURRICANE; FEARS THAT STORM COULD STRIKE AS A CAT 4
Today is the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.. As memorial services played out in New Orleans to mark the tragic events of three years ago when the state, local, and federal government all failed, a new storm (and maybe 2) on the horizon is causing fear along the Gulf Coast. And fear, again, three years later, in the city of New Orleans.. Hurricane Gustav, now over open water, is set to explode into a hell storm in the Gulf of Mexico.. Accuweather is predicting that a building high pressure in the United States will force Gustav to Louisiana.. A map tonight on Accuweather shows Louisiana is set to get extreme damage from Gustav.. Henry Margusity wrote today of the 'ultimate disaster' in which two storms, Gustav and Hanna, could strike the Gulf Coast and play havoc with the nation's oil production.. Three years later, New Orleans on edge over Gustav.. Oil Rig insurers brace themselves.. National Guard troops activated.. Offshore oil producers evacuate workers .. The five day cone of possibility for Gustav takes it directly to Southwest Louisiana.. A discussion statement tonight from government forecasters: "DUE TO THE NOTABLE MODEL SPREAD LATE IN THE FORECAST PERIOD...IT IS ONCE AGAIN IMPORTANT TO RESTATE THAT IT IS SIMPLY NOT YET POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHERE AND WHEN GUSTAV WILL MAKE FINAL LANDFALL".. THE NEXT ADVISORY WILL BE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER AT 1100 PM EDT..

You've heard of MILFs, maybe FILFs.. sure getting creative, aren't we? And when I heard McCain only met Sarah Palin one time, I thought.. it must be her hair? Maybe it's that she's apparently the national GILF, as many are calling her.. a Governor I'd like to .. well, you know. Wonkette tonight showcasing her 1984 beauty queen photo.. Shirts appearing online reading, "Sarah Palin, Alaska's GILF" And I imagine that soon, a search on Google for Sarah Palin *with safesearch turned OFF of course* will show a lot more creative views and superimposed heads of Palin on various contorted bodies.. Ain't that America.. (And tonight, a nasty Rush Limbaugh link compares a rough Hillary and a hotter Palin)

Reactions: Who is Sarah Palin?
REUTERS PHOTO
Until today, Alasksa Governor Sarah Palin was unknown in the lower 48 states..
The Obama campaign wanted today to be all about Barack.. the speech, the 75,000+ in attendance at Invesco, and the 40 million record viewers watching on television around the world..
But instead of typing and talking about the monumental speech last night given by Obama, the media quickly turned its attention to the world's best kept secret until about 10:50am today: John McCain's vice presidential pick..
The 'hockey mom' and tough governor often took on her own party.. she opposed the bridge to nowhere.. (however, she is until scrutiny in her state now after firing someone that did not fire a state trooper..) .. she also hid her pregnancy from the public until about 8 months.. she opposes abortion--tested by her youngest child, born with down syndrome. She wanted to keep her baby.. Her oldest son enlisted in the military and is headed to Iraq..
Rumors today that John McCain really didn't know Palin.. perhaps it's a surgical strike against the Democrats, a hopeful play in the year everyone wants change.. And the year everyone is talking about that glass ceiling..
Revealed tonight on Hardball, Palin and her husband was a fan of Pat Buchanan back in 1996..
She's a lifelong NRA member.. She was a runner up for beauty queen.. Her husband works in oil. She likes basketball and hockey..
And the world is reacting.. A sampling:
