JANUARY 2010 PUTTING JANUARY 2007 TO SHAME.. FOR THE OTHER DORKS OUT THERE THAT REMEMBER IT

I love cold weather. It makes me feel clean, comforted, and disinfected. Really, maybe there is Eskimo somewhere in my bloodline. But it's cold. I mean, it's really cold--to the point where your face feels like it's going to shatter once the next gust of wind strikes it.. Your cheeks frozen. The kind of cold that your spat instantly freezes to your chin as it drips down.. the kind of cold that makes animal's urine stream freeze instantly..

Depending on where you are in the country currently, the wind chill is either 0 degrees or up to 35 below zero .. Seriously?.. yes.. seriously.

Bad timing for Copenhagen to tell us about global warming..

Ironically, last night SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE repeated the episode with Al Gore hosting a guest spot commentary on the fake news, in which Gore mentioned how global warming has to be real since people were shorts outside the studio in then Mid-November.. Yes.. And now, fast forward to January, 2010.. In New York City.. I doubt the guy in shorts is still outside NBC studios..

There are a few news stories floating around the web tonight illustrating just how cold things are:
  • Florida oranges are being threatened by the cold. This story is important because 1) the cold has reached Florida, and 2) I like oranges..

  • Temperatures are 30 degrees below normal in Iowa.. Really. Seriously? Yes.. seriously..

  • Accuweather talks about face-numbing cold here now, coming next week.. with some snow maybe to join?

  • Widespread area of snow possible

...This all is a big difference from January 2007. Only two years ago..Back in January 2007, Cherry Blossoms were blooming in Washington D.C., the East Coast was seeing extreme warm temperatures.. it really felt like global warming gone mad.. There were parts of the Northeast where shorts and T-shirts were commonplace .. In January 2007. I wrote in 2007
"I am probably getting on the nerves of everyone who reads this site already (judging from the comments left on here most of the time that is) but I am going to say it again: It is damn warm. Today is January 6!! January 6 in the Northeast. I took my dog out for a walk this morning at 10:30 am. It was already 61 degrees.

Pennsylvania winters and Northeast winters at that are sometimes harsh, sometimes warm, and sometimes mixed. This year? I don't know what to say or write or even think. It's unusual to say the least and almost scary to say the most..

Maybe Al Gore has an opinion on it?

And with earth changes so come human changes. Ontario's biggest ski resort has first ever winter closure... 1,300 people have been laid off by the resort.

70 degrees or higher expected in parts of the Northeast today, including New York City.. The tourists got lucky.

There is a brief bout of cold weather coming this upcoming week. And maybe even *gasp* snow! Whether that cold wave--as all others this year--lasts a day or if it does the wacky and actually lasts the winter, one thing is for sure: This world goes through extreme weather. Sometimes deadly. Sometimes cherry blossoms bloom and make us all happy. In the end it's the earth's call, not ours. And often that's the scariest of all.
It was only a month later that the same areas had a Valentines Day storm.. another month later a blizzard on St Patrick's Day..

It shows, of course, how many extremes weather can showcase.. I wrote later in January 2007 on this site,
"The POST story reminds me of the TWILIGHT ZONE where the earth was thrown off course and headed directly towards the sun causing a massive blistering heat wave. Of course it was all a dream in the episode.. in reality the earth was flying away from the sun, causing an eventual freeze that would kill the planet. Life is funny"
The patterns will always change.. But more so than not, the average summer will be hot, and the typical winter will be cold. This year puts January 2007 to shame.. Cherry blossoms and flowers blooming in January is a laughing matter this year, as the wind shatters frozen faces...

It feels like 2007 was the dream when we were heading towards the sun. This year, so far, clearly is reality. A very real, very cold, and very brutal reality..
