A dream turns into a nightmare for McCain over MLK holiday vote
John McCain went to the Christian Leadership Conference in Memphis to commemorate the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr...Standing outside of the Lorraine Motel, John McCain's speech ended up being a heckling match between him and listeners.
McCain, himself anyone making him do it, announced that he was "wrong" when he first voted against a Martin Luther King Day holiday .. The crowd was hardly mixed with their reactions.. though a few yelled, "We forgive you," McCain faced more anger than forgiveness.
McCain had said at the time he voted against the bill because it cost too much..The Democratic National Committee was not sold on the McCain apology ..
It's pretty interesting that McCain brought it up himself. But of course politically he had to. His vote against the holiday was sure to come up on its own, especially when he stands in front of the hotel where the civil rights hero was gunned down some 40 years ago.
