IT'S NOT THE CRIME.. IT'S THE HYPOCRISY..
They are the words being said around Albany, New York.
Eliot Spitzer the true epitome of a Schmuck of the Week.
Eliot Spitzer was busy for years being tough on crime. He built a reputation and career on being the avenger against criminal activity such as prostitution---and now, the same man accused of being involved with paying lots of money for prostitutes.
Governor Spitzer is facing possible impeachment proceedings from state Republicans; Democrats are beginning to call on the crime avenger to resign from the office.
Shame at the top spot.
The Governor of the Empire State, according to federal filings, was Client #9. The budget deadline in New York is April 1.
Today's DAILY NEWS headline: "Pay for Luv Gov" .. NY POST: "HO NO"
The New York TIMES took a more professional tone.
But the irony doesn't escape anyone. Spitzer was Mr. Ethical. He was possible presidential material. Until the hooker scandal broke..
Whether he resigns, or even gets in hotter water that even a hooker couldn't dream of, the clear aspect of this story: He's a Schmuck on so many levels. He left down a state, he left down his family in a unique and tragic way, and he left down everyone that recognizes ethical and legal boundaries.
The frightening thing: He seemed to know what he was doing.
One ad when Mr. Spitzer ran for office positioned him as a moral crusader against all crime.
But it's not the words that make a man. It's the actions.
And the actions make Mr. Spitzer not only the Schmuck of the week, but quite possibly the year.
And it's only March.
